The Tasmanian government and the Atlantic salmon industry claim open-net fish cages are vital to Tasmania’s economy and that we can’t do without them!
Our politicians have swallowed this propaganda hook, line and sinker for over 30 years!
We say: prove it or admit it is a scam!
1. This petition calls for a fully independent, professionally prepared cost benefit analysis of the current industry – now incredibly, in over 30 years this has never been done!
2. This petition also demands an independent, professionally prepared business case to validate the government’s plans to expand the Atlantic salmon farming in Tasmania.
If it is prudent for the government to prepare a Business Case for the proposed Macquarie Point Football Stadium, why haven’t they done the same where our precious marine heritage is at stake?
Before we put any more of the world’s most beautiful and pristine waterways at risk …. Let’s find out what more it’s going to cost us.
Tasmanians need to know:
- How the Atlantic salmon industry really benefits Tasmania.
- The real cost of marine and coastal pollution, loss of marine life, impact on coastal communities, diminished Tasmanian CLEAN GREEN brand and negatively impacted tourism industry.
- The real costs of government subsidies, publicly funded scientific research, administration, regulation and monitoring.
- The real costs of lost public amenity, contaminated water and undervalued leases.
- The real loss to Tasmania as multinational companies send profits overseas.
- The real jobs number (not exaggerated).
- The real economic contribution of the industry to Tasmania.
Our best chance to influence the government is to show them the depth of our concernwith multiple signatures!

This could be our last chance to stop salmon industry expansion because the government’s “enduring” salmon plan, which will double the industry, is to be implemented on 1 may 2023.
Together we can and must bring about change and save our pristine waterways!
