The RESEED Centre
The Centre is on 2 acres, situated 500 metres from the beach, shops and cafes in the beautiful coastal town of Penguin, north-west Tasmania.
The RESEED Centre buildings include:
- residential accommodation,
- meeting rooms,
- office spaces
The property includes an urban orchard with a range organic fruit trees, from apples and pears, through to less common fruits such as persimmons and avocado. In line with our philosophy of sustainability several valuable building upgrades have occurred since purchasing the property. These include simple energy saving or production measures such as roof insulation, installing heat pumps and the installation of a 10kW grid-connected photovoltaic (solar power) system.
The grounds and buildings are being managed and developed in a way that enhances the practical learning opportunities for those who visit and attend courses or workshops at the Centre.
We have used the Earth Charter to guide activities at the Centre. The principles include care of people and community, care of the earth, social justice, nonviolence, and peace. For many this is a new way of living and learning, and we are inspired to keep reaching out into the community of north west Tasmania.
Organic gardening and farming approaches were used in the initial development of the grounds. In 2015/16 the excellent design team, Hannah and Anton, from Good Life Permaculture worked with the RESEED team to create an overall Permaculture design for the site. Those engaged in the ongoing development of the property continue to explore how Permaculture principles may be applied to the site and in building connections with the community.
