Our next Orchard Collective gathering is this coming Sunday 3rd December. The biochar workshop was informative and inspiring, with Frank Strie sharing his expertise and wide knowledge of the current and future potential applications of biochar. The cone kiln (photo below) comes with a BBQ plate attachment, so it was great to round off the session with a BBQ lunch. We produced just over two barrow loads of charcoal and we will explore next steps in processing and using this (I’m preparing a small quantity as a Christmas present …for the soil life).Let me know if you’d like to be involved in future biochar making sessions. Thanks also to Gerald and Keith for preparing the workshop site and equipment.A couple of things on a radar for this weekend. The pear/cherry slugs have moved onto the lush new growth. There are a range of approaches described here: https://www.sgaonline.org.au/pear-and-cherry-slug/A large limb of apricot near the garage door has fallen and we will be removing this. The fruit is setting and now is a good time to look at what thinning may be required.Looking forward to seeing many of you on Sunday.Cheers,Nick (Coordinator RESEED Growers & Eaters Circle)When?
