What do we mean by ‘Protect the Dial Range’? Here are our three priority areas for short-term action and long-term advocacy.

Stop the imminently scheduled clearfelling.

Local, state and federal governments are all investing in the Dial (roads and trails), yet the state-owned logging agency thinks it appropriate to simultaneously clear 45 hectares of Tassie Devil and Spotted-tailed Quoll habitat that intersects with current walking trails.

Ensure the unprotected land in the Dial is not logged.

Approximately a quarter of the Dial Range is unprotected, classified as Future Potential Production Forest (FPPF) Land, and does not sit in reserves. FPPF land is high conservation value land that was once set aside to be put into the reserve system. It is the very classification of land that the government is planning to convert 39,000 hectares across the state (primarily in the NW and NE) into active forestry land and commence logging. Is the Dial being considered? We don’t know, but this 39,000 hectares could just be the start of things to come, so we need to be on the front foot.

Advocate for unified reserves within the Dial.

The Dial Range is not a unified parcel of land – there are five different types of reserves (Public Reserve, Nature Recreation Area, Regional Reserve, Nature Reserve, State Reserve). Some allow mining, some allow special species logging – each have their own rules, prescriptions and regulations. This leaves these forests open to exploitation and the animals that call them home vulnerable.
